The Kentucky Blood Center Speaks with Floyd County Chamber of Commerce

The Floyd County Chamber of Commerce held a networking luncheon meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Peking Chinese Restaurant in Prestonsburg.  The guest speaker was Kelley McPhail, Director of Donor Recruitment, with the Kentucky Blood Center. The Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) is a community-based nonprofit organization providing life-saving blood products to Kentucky hospitals. KBC strives to ensure every hospital served has access to a safe and abundant blood supply. KBC is the largest FDA licensed nonprofit blood bank headquartered in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

McPhail explained that KBC relies on volunteer blood donors to provide over 400 pints of blood per day to meet area patients’ needs. She added that “blood donations are a constant need and can only come from donors.” McPhail emphasized that the majority of the blood donations come from blood drives organized and hosted by businesses, churches, schools and community organizations. She stated, “It is vital to have enough blood on the shelves at all times, because the need for blood never takes a vacation or holiday.”

Consistent with its mission to ensure a safe and abundant supply of life-giving blood to the hospitals served, KBC will support local communities by being an integral and valued partner in the healthcare arena.

Information and scheduled blood drives can be found on the KBC website at www.kybloodcenter.org and if interested in hosting a blood drive, please contact Alice Compton, at (606) 793-4977.

Following the presentation by McPhail, Chamber business representatives were given the opportunity to highlight activities and events in Floyd County and at their businesses.
