AT&T's Hood Harris speaks to the Floyd County Chamber

The Floyd County Chamber of Commerce held a networking luncheon meeting on September 15, 2015 at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park.

The Floyd County Chamber of Commerce held a networking luncheon meeting on September 15, 2015 at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. The topic for the luncheon was “Telecommunications: Today & Tomorrow.” The guest speaker was Hood Harris, president of AT&T Kentucky. Harris described how technology, especially the iPhone, has totally changed our way of life. He said the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and has now become the remote control for one’s life.

Harris highlighted many of AT&T’s recent accomplishments in the industry. He described how AT&T recently announced it will accept more than $30 million annually over the next six years from the FCC’s Connect America Fund to supplement the expansion of high-speed Internet service to more than 84,000 rural homes and businesses across the Commonwealth.

Harris also said AT&T joined the Kentucky Department of Education to officially complete the effort to connect all 173 school districts across the state to high- speed, fiber-based Internet access. This connectivity exceeds a national benchmark which was set in 2012 by the State Educational Technology Directors Association. But perhaps more importantly, according to the Kentucky Department of Education, it is believed that Kentucky is the first state in the nation to meet that national goal.

Following the presentation by Harris, Chamber business representatives were given the opportunity to highlight activities and events in Floyd County and at their businesses.
