Floyd County Chamber of Commerce Discusses Hunger in Eastern KY
The Floyd County Chamber of Commerce held a networking luncheon meeting on January 13, 2015 at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. The topic for this luncheon was “Hunger in Central and Eastern Kentucky.” During the luncheon, Marian Guinn, CEO of God’s Pantry Food Bank, described how hunger is a growing epidemic in eastern Kentucky. She added that many children in our area wake up each morning unsure where their next meal will come from and 318,000 central & eastern Kentuckians are at high risk of hunger.
Guinn highlighted facts from the Hunger in America 2014 study that described the choices and challenges people face when struggling with hunger. Guinn described how the mission of God’s Pantry Food Bank is to reduce hunger through community cooperation. She explained how individuals and organizations can make a difference by hosting a local food drive and donating to God’s Pantry Food Bank. She added that God’s Pantry Food Bank has over 25 affiliate distribution agencies in Floyd County and that listing can be found on their website at www.godspantryfoodbank.org or by calling (859) 255-6592.
Following the presentation by Guinn, Chamber business representatives were given the opportunity to highlight some of their activities and events in Floyd County and at their business.
