BSCTC hosts Leadership Floyd County


The Floyd County Leadership Academy class met last week at Big Sandy Community & Technical College for its first professional development session.
The Floyd County Leadership Academy class met last week at Big Sandy Community & Technical College for its first professional development session. The class focused on leadership development and included topics on Floyd County’s Past, Present & Future.
Dr. George Edwards, BSCTC President, welcomed the group and provided the members with an overview of the community college. In addition to the presentation by Edwards, Dr. Nancy Johnson, BSCTC Provost, discussed the programs offered through BSCTC and how workforce development plays a key role in our community and future economic development.
Following Dr. Johnson’s presentation, Floyd County Judge Executive Robert “Doc” Marshall shared his vision for Floyd County. He also discussed projects completed during his tenure as County Judge Executive and projects on the horizon. The last morning session featured an ECHO presentation on the History of Floyd County by Lisa Stumbo. ECHO is a program at BSTCS that focuses on Embracing Cultural Heritage Opportunities and includes facilitating and promoting area educational programs on cultural heritage.
To conclude the sessions, participants turned their focus to personal leadership development. The afternoon speaker was Bob Gound, a certified John Maxwell coach, speaker & trainer and founder of The Absolute Leader. Gound discussed how one can become a person of influence in today’s society. He described techniques used to be an influential person and ten specific ways to increase one’s own leadership influence. Gound provided examples to improve listening skills and challenged the leadership class to become people of positive influence.
The 2014-15 Floyd County Leadership class consists of Danya Anderson, McDowell ARH; Kelli Ayers, Big Sandy Community & Technical College; Crystal Coleman, Skeans Marathon; Joe Campbell, Big Sandy Community & Technical College; Emmitt Hamilton, Century 21 American Way Realty; Danita Reynolds, US Bank; Whitney Layne, First Commonwealth Bank; Stephanie Stratton, Citizens National Bank; and Heath Wiley, Gearheart Communications.
