Davis email@example.com- November 6, 2013) A month after opening their doors, the owners of McGuire’s Brickhouse restaurant welcomed members of the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday. Once the owners were able to get out of the kitchen, that is. Jarred McGuire, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Jenna, and father, Kimber, originally scheduled the event for 2 p.m., thinking that time of day would be slow enough that he could devote his time to his Chamber guests. Instead, he was busy in the kitchen, dealing with a late lunch rush. It wasn’t the first time since opening that he was snagged by success. When the restaurant opened Oct. 1, the McGuires filled their cupboards with enough food to last awhile … or so they thought. “We went through 10 days worth of food in three-and-a-half days,” McGuire said. Still, McGuire isn’t complaining. He is happy that his plans to create a destination restaurant for Prestonsburg are paying off. McGuire says about half of his customers come from the local community, but the other half is driving from other areas — sometimes, from pretty far away. He says he has some customers who drive from Pikeville every day for lunch, while the restaurant has had reservations from Louisville and from other states. The Brickhouse features two distinct attractions — the menu and the restaurant itself. McGuire said when planning the menu, the owners wanted to do “kind of a twist on Americana.” There are the usual pub foods, such as pizza and burgers, as well as more upscale offerings, such as ribeye and salmon. The “Prestonsburger” — which features homemade molasses bourbon barbecue sauce, onion straws, red onion, cheddar cheese and spicy brown mustard on 8 ounces of Angus beef and a kaiser bun — is one popular item. But McGuire says the most popular item is the restaurant’s philly cheesesteak pizza. And then there’s the restaurant itself, housed in the former Jack Hyden home on the corner of South Lake Drive and South Central Avenue. Built in 1917, the McGuires have fully restored the house and added a few touches of their own. One thing McGuire said he wanted to do with the design was make it a throwback to the 1920s. When guests first walk through the front door, they will see seating areas across several downstairs rooms. But tucked behind a sliding bookcase is a hallway leading to the bar, reminiscent of how speakeasies were concealed during the Prohibition era. The bar features standard beers as well as a selection of Kentucky brews. The bar also features a selection of Kentucky bourbons — no Tennessee whiskeys — and drinks are mixed with juices and other authentic ingredients, rather than drink mixes. McGuire’s Brickhouse is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday. Reservations can be made by calling (606) 886-0909.
